Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and the Stigma of Sexual Assault

According to CNN, the National Sexual Assault Hotline got a 201% increase in calls during yesterday's hearing with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh. To me, it could not be more obvious that the reason for this is the fact that Ford's testimony struck a chord with survivors across the country. According to RAINN, there have been several instances like this, especially in the #MeToo era, when calls have increased when a prominent survivor of assault speaks out. Yesterday's uptick in calls shows that when people feel validated and represented, they are more willing to live authentically and speak about their experiences. This principle can be applied to any group of people: sexual assault survivors, people of color, disabled people, etc. We've discussed this in class through topics like cultivation theory.
