Kevin Hart Won’t Host Oscars Due to Homophobic Past

After Kevin Hart was named 2019’s Oscar host, tweets from his past were dug up. These tweets included years’ old anti-gay sentiments. As the issue heated up, Hart took to Instagram to address it. Instead of apologizing, he defended his past and said he’s proud of the man he is today. This attitude is likely what cost him the honor of hosting the Oscars.

This incident speaks to larger issues of homophobia as well as the seemingly annual issues the Oscars and other award shows have been facing. Firstly, this shows that homophobia is still very much present. Many point to successful LGBT members of society to argue that equal rights have been achieved, but anti-gay sentiments are still prevalent even among Hollywood. Next, this presents a continuous problem to the Oscars, which likely selected Kevin Hart in order to defend against #OscarsSoWhite criticism. Now they’ll need to find a new host and continue to defend their reputation.

  1. This dialogue surrounding this recent event has definitely been interesting. There are people blaming this generation, and even the LGBT community for being "too sensitive". To me it seems like these people are mad at the call out culture today because people are finally being held accountable for their actions. I do not see the decision to remove Hart as the Oscar Host as a "sensitive" reaction at all. His "jokes" were outright homophobic, saying awful things about if he son were to come out gay. Yes, it is important to look at the intent of a joke, whether he meant it to be harmless or not, but we must also look at the impact. Joking about homophobic stuff like this normalizes that behavior and has resulted in the oppression, violence, and murder of LGBT people worldwide.
