Swimming with Men Shows Realistic Bodies

The new film, Swimming with Men, is about a lonely middle-aged man who finds companionship and passion by joining a men’s synchronized swimming club. According to the New York Times, the movie has a focus on flesh.

This focus is not on the male bodies that viewers usually see in film. It is not the sanitized body or the ideal male body. Instead, it shows men as they are. While objectification is not as large of an issue for men as it is for women, unrealistic beauty standards are still certainly prominent among men.

  1. It is good to see other body representations in the media of men. While objectification is not as large of a problem for men, it definitely can still have negative effects on men's body image. I think more diverse representations that show different body types instead of the usual chiseled male body is a positive step.
