#1YearAfterMaria

There is a Twitter hashtag today commemorating the anniversary of Hurricane Maria and the island is still suffering from its effects. The death toll has been raised to almost 3,000 people, which President Trump has denied. The media is currently scrutinizing his response to Hurricane Florence because of his response to Hurricane Maria.

This hashtag gives a voice to the island, which has been neglected by the country and the media. Although Puerto Rico is a part of the United States, people argue that they were treated as second-class citizens. The Refinery29 article linked below uses the stories of several women to tell the story of Puerto Ricans in their own words. It shows the reality that people spent months without food, water, electricity, and so forth, yet they were expected to recover with little government assistance.
