Black Single Mother Set to Star in 'Bewitched' Reboot
Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and producer Yamara Taylor are working on the Bewitched reboot for ABC. The original 1960s version featured a white cast, and two prior reboots fell through at CBS and NBC, according to Slate.
At the center of the reboot will be an interracial family, featuring a black single mother who is a witch and marries a white mortal man. The synopsis, according to Slate, will feature Samantha as a hard-worker who realizes that, "even when a black girl is literally magic, she's still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America."
Single motherhood, especially black single motherhood, and interracial marriage are two things that do not receive a lot of representation in the media. And when they are represented, they tend to be highly stigmatized. This Bewitched reboot has the potential to be a step toward combatting the symbolic annhilitation of these, and other, identities in the media.
