Cardi B and Jacq The Stripper- Representation of Strippers In Media
Strippers are often represented in films and media in a way that takes power from them. Pho-feminists like Tina Fey will say that strippers are degrading themselves for attention of men, and that it is sexist and they are not feminists. Films often portray them without a voice- as with sex workers, they usually end up getting killed or having some violence inflicted upon them. They are usually in a victim role, a "save the stripper" narrative, which exists in political discourse as well, or they're only represented in reference to how they are pleasuring a man. There is no "Magic Mike" film for women strippers.
But Cardi B and comedian, artist, and stripper Jacq the stripper are two celebrities changing that narrative. They both talk openly about stripping in a way that is empowering, and call out the way it is and has been represented.
Ellen: Did you like [stripping]?
