Coach Makes History with First Black and Male Brand Representative
Coach made history when it announced Michael B. Jordan as
its first male and black spokesperson, the first time in its 77 years as a
luxury brand. Jordan joins Selena Gomez as the main representatives of the
brand. According to Coach, Jordan will have a large role in the brand helping
to launch design projects and partaking in projects with the Coach Foundation, the company's charity group. As
GQ points out in their article, this move by Coach means they will now have two
people of color as their brand representatives. While brands are certainly moving
in the right direction by becoming more diverse with their brand
representatives and ad campaigns, there is still a long way to go to achieving
representation of all groups.
I am extremely surprised that coach has never had a male of color in it's ads. Especially since the sexualization of Black bodies is so rampant. Nevertheless, I think the more diversity the better when done the right way and am glad Coach is making some marketing changes.
