HBO's Insecure: Class Diversity

While we all love Insecure for it's strong contemporary Black cultural references and amazing writing, it also teaches us a thing or two about class. Although the cast is majority Black, the characters all have distinct financial stabilities. Take Issa for example, the main character. In the most recent season, Issa finds herself sleeping on the couch of a friend after gentrification made to her apartment become unaffordable. Although she has a 9-5 job at a local non- profit, Issa works for Lyft as a taxi driver in order to make ends meet.

Her best friend Molly on the other hand, is a middle class a Black woman. Molly does not ever mention money troubles and works at a law firm. In addition, she just took a position at an all Black law firm where the majority of the characters are also middle class.

Other characters in the show have had ups and downs with securing stable forms of income, like Molly's high school sweetheart, David, but others are finally getting lucky with their finances like Issa's ex boyfriend, Lawerence.

Insecure is my favorite show for many reasons. Mostly because of how realistic the characters are. The varied financial classes of the characters aims to highlight the diverse class struggle of the POC community. While stereotypes about POC are often that we lack work ethics and the meritocracy for stable financial conditions, Insecure aims to not only debunk this stereotype, but offer layers to the reality of POCs and their financial conditions.
