Representation, not Tokenization

A New York Times article about LGBTQIA+ representation in government (specifically, Congress) expressed the ideal that representation is a huge step in becoming a more equitable nation. While this may be true, it should also be noted that one former state rep from Connecticut named John Scott explained that he thinks he, as a candidate, will appeal to both Democrat and Republican voters because he is “socially liberal and fiscally conservative”. Supporting the Democratic or Republican party aligns closely to supporting capitalist systems which have histories of racism and exploitation. Scott’s platform, though seemingly progressive and demanding, might not provide for the needs of everyone living in Connecticut. Just because someone belongs to a marginalized group does not mean that that person will provide insight that is forward-thinking, empathetic or trauma-informed. Tokenizing LGBTQIA+ people or people of any identity, for that matter, is never the most progressive or productive way to enhance a system.
