Revolve is Cancelled
Twitter users called for the cancellation of Revolve, a clothing brand, for producing a controversial graphic sweatshirt. The shirt says, “Being fat is not beautiful, it’s an excuse.” People are upset that company is fat shaming people by using a thin model to convey this message. It represents “fat” bodies as stereotypically lazy and not beautiful. Revolve has issued an apology stating that the image on social media was prematurely released. Lena Dunham was supposed to model the sweatshirt (that she helped to design) to advocate for body positivity and raise awareness for the charity Girls Write Now. The company missed the mark by having a thin model wear this shirt, producing it only up to a size extra-large and failing to provide the image with the appropriate context.

Not surprised Lena Dunham helped design that shirt, she is a problematic person to say the least in many ways. I think the company missed the mark in general, I don't see how this shirt in any context could be okay. This reminds me of Urban Outfitters constantly coming under fire for some of the shirts they have released, such as their "eat less" shirt or their Kent State shirt. Or when H&M had the shirt that said "coolest monkey in the jungle" and the model was a young black boy. I don't know who approves these things, but we as consumers definitely have the power to boycott brands like these. Social Media is a powerful tool to hold these big brands accountable, but does it stick? Or do people forget and continue to give their money to these places.
