Jenifer Lewis at the Emmy's

At the Emmy's this past week, Jenifer Lewis wore Nike in support of former NFL player, Colin Kaepernick, and his protest against police brutality and racial discrimination. Lewis said, “I am wearing Nike to applaud them for supporting Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial injustice and police brutality. I wear Nike to say thank you. Thank you for leading the resistance.  We need more corporate America to stand up also. These are not dark times, theses are awakening times.” This is a perfect example of how celebrities can use their power to advocate for a cause that is important to them. In this day, with social media and news all the time, celebrities should use their platform to speak out against prominent issues and bring injustice to light. I think it is great that Jenifer Lewis used the Emmy's to advocate for something that was meaningful to her, knowing that people would listen because of the location.

Lewis is an actress on the show, Black-ish, which has broken a lot of racial barriers and redefined what it means to make a sit-com in today's world. She is already a recognizable figure for advocacy and is continue to use her power and privilege to support important causes. I think due to the fact that she is already someone who has broken a lot of barriers, she is using her power in a way that can promote this message about police brutality and racial injustice.
