The Hate U Give

A new movie starring Common and Amandla Stalberg will be released on October 19th that touches on many issues affecting the black community through the eyes and experiences of one girl. In the film, Starr, a black girl who goes to a white private school, witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right.
I really like the way this movie portrays the issues and makes the protagonist a black woman because so much of the #Blacklivesmatter movement was started and supported by black women, such as the originators of the movement (Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi) and the Mothers of the Movement . So much of the conversations about police brutatlity center around black men with out taking into account the black women who are left behind to start and carry on causes in their names, nor does it always account for the cis- and transgender black women who are heavily affected by it as well. By putting the power of this movie behind a black woman it shows solidarity and recognizes where the power of these movements often lay.
I totally agree that Black women are often left out of the discourse about activism in the Black community. I am excited to see how this film plays out and have also noticed that many Black films are making their way to the big screen. It makes me optimistic about the direction Hollywood is going.
