They Say Vote, But When We Do…
On Tuesday, the only African
American female lawmaker in the Vermont Legislature, resigned. Representative
Ruqqaiyah “Kiah” Morris (D-Bennington) told supporters that she faced years of
racially motivated attacks online, home invasions, and vandalism on her
property. Last month, Rep Morris announced that she would finish out her
current term, but would end her re-election bid. However, when the racial harassment
became too much, she decided to resign altogether.
Rep Morris’ home was broken
into and swastikas were painted on trees ear her property. Chief Paul Doucette
defended his department’s handling of the case, while Rep Morris says the
Police Department’s response was underwhelming. Now, the Vermont Attorney General’s
office is currently investigating the threats.
