Racist Laundry Commercial
This racist laundry commercial received backlash in 2016 when it aired. It recently came to my attention in a presentation by Lambda Pi Chi about cultural humility. In the commercial, a man “washes” his skin so he transforms from black to Asian. This is a symbolic of how the media perpetuates the idea that black skin is undesirable and people should aspire to whiteness. It also portrays the black man as sexually aggressive. According to CBS news, it mimics an Italian commercial with the tag line “Coloured is better.” The woman in the Italian commercial is not attracted to the Italian man until he transforms to a black man. Again, the black man is sexualized and rap music plays as he comes out the machine. Although both portray black men differently, both commercials play on the sexual stereotypes of black men
