What About the Winner

We all know what happened during the US Open Women's Final. The video of Serena Williams fighting for her rights as a woman and as an athlete has gone viral since the match this past Saturday. The world has also been outraged by the overshadowing of Naomi Osaka not only was her moment at the trophy ceremony diminished by boos but her ethnicity as Japanese and Haitian has gone noticed.  An article published in Blavity headlines "Maybe This Naomi Osaka Family Photo Will Get Reporters To Finally Stop Ignoring Her Black Heritage" Osaka is the first Japanese and the first Haitian to win the US Open.
By now most people have seen the racist cartoon displaying Serena as a mad black woman. What hasn't gotten as much attention is that in the same cartoon Osaka is displayed as a white woman. In a tweet by Katy Stoll "This obviously isn’t the most offensive aspect of the the Serena Williams cartoon but: if it isn’t sexist or racist then why is Naomi Osaka, who is Japanese and Haitian, portrayed as a white woman with a blonde ponytail?"
