Asking for Help
About a year ago, Riverdale actress, Camila Mendes, decided it was time to seek help for her disordered eating. She was bulimic in high school and for a little of college. Then she joined the television industry where she was constantly feeling anxiety about what she put into her body. Now, at 24 she discusses in a Teen Vogue article, how seeking help from a therapist and nutritionist changed her life. Camila said, "The voices in my head never completely go away. They're just way quieter now. Every once in a while I'll look at myself in the mirror and think, 'Ugh, I don't like the way that looks.' But then I'll just drop it. I don't let it consume me.”
This article made me think about the positive impacts of the media and the voices of the famous. Camila Mendes stars in a television show that targets young adults and even teens. This article is important for young people to know that it is okay to ask for help. We live in a society where mental health is stigmatized or not talked about. We need to do better and we need to have conversations about these topics.
This is so true. Mental health is definitely still stigmatized in the United States and people are afraid that by getting help they will be labeled as crazy. I think when famous people like Camila Mendes talk about getting help for their mental health, it chips away at the stigma.
