Bigger Conglomerates Leads to Little Diversity
Over the summer Disney agreed to acquire 21st Century Fox for $71.3 billion. While the deal has yet to be fully finalized, Disney announced this week the executives it will bring over from 21st Century Fox. While some of them are women, all of the executives moving over to Disney are white and many are male. CBS also announced David Nevins will be promoted to Chief Creative Officer to help run the network in the wake of Les Moonves’ exit from the company after sexual assault allegations. These moves in media show that the executives of media companies are still overwhelmingly male and white. While CBS could have put a woman executive in this position to make a statement, they did not choose to bring more diversity to their company. Part of the reason so many groups are symbolically annihilated from the media is because they are not represented in positions of power in the media. One way media companies can ensure there are more multifaceted images and representations of groups that are oppressed is to have people from all groups in executive positions at media companies.
