Bill Cosby During #MeToo

Last week, Bill Cosby was sentenced 3 to 10 years in prison for sexual assault. This was the first high profile sentencing since the beginning of the #MeToo movement, that started last year. While there have been other men who now face criminal charges, this case is the first one that has gotten a lot of media attention.

This sentencing is shocking because there have been so many accusations since this movement has started and our legal system has failed to support survivors and carry our justice.

This case is important, and relevant to this class, because representation is key in this case. In order to understand and truly think that reporting a sexual assault will be believed by authorities, it is important for people to see the consequences. Many women who have been sexually assaulted do not report what happened to them because they are afraid of the fallout, whether that is not being believed by the police or anticipating the release of their attackers. I'm glad this case has been getting so much media attention because it is showing women everywhere that by speaking up, action will be taken. This case is showing people that there are consequences for sexual assault and that we need to stand by survivors and believe their stories.
