"Crazy Rich Asians" Chinese Release
The article "China Greenlights ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Release, But It Might Not Shine At The Box Office" from Huffington Post discusses how the impact that the film had in America might not translate as well into Chinese theaters. Essentially, this movie was very important in terms of representation for Asian populations in Western countries, composed of the first majority-Asian cast in a major US film for the first time in 25 years, providing a momentary respite in relation to the chronic symbolic annihilation that many minorities face in mainstream media in the US. However, this impact is less influential in China, where moviegoers frequently see Chinese-majority casts. It was a huge question in the first place as to whether or not the film would even be allowed for official release in China due to censorship issues, but even though it has now been approved, the value of this approval does not reach the same level in China as it does to people in the US.
