Georgia Voting Process Prevents Black Voters from Voting

In an article from the Huffington Post, research from the Associated Press reported that over 53,000 voters who applied to register to vote had their voter status considered "incomplete" without their knowledge. The reason this is so controversial is because 70% of those applications were from black people.

The reason the applications have been considered incomplete is because Georgia law requires that applications be an exact match to identification cars and legal paperwork. Danielle Lang, a senior counsel at Campaign Legal Center says, '“There are kind of endless ways for this to go wrong. Anyone who transposes a digit or a letter at any point, either at the DMV or at the clerk’s office at the registration, or the voter themselves, any tiny error is going to lead to a no match,” she said. “You can imagine that for foreign names the likelihood of a misspelling happening at some point during various data inputs is more likely.”'.

This is is a huge problem because it directly targets minorities and marginalized groups. If we look at this using the three pillars of white supremacy, this process oppresses anyone who is considered foreign, and further alienates them from participating in voting- a basic right every American is entitled to, and furthers people who have more "American" names.
