Greg O'Shalae objectifies Keira Knightley, proves her statements right

Keira Knightley has appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and is in the upcoming film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, but the English actress does not always agree with Disney’s messages. Last week on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Knightley said that her daughter cannot see some Disney films, including Cinderella and The Little Mermaid. An article from ABC News said that Knightley claimed the movies exhibit a message that women need to wait for men to find their voices or be rescued.

I stumbled across this after I saw an article from Fansided/Hidden Remote that used several different examples to call out Knightley for her apparent hypocrisy. The author, Greg O’Shalae said her career hangs on the coattails of Johnny Depp in “a series of pirate movies,” which is a problem because pirates are known for “raping and pillaging.” He then brought up her semi-nude modeling photos, sex scenes and movies where she has been topless or given lapdances. He then questions if this is the right message she wants to send her daughter, as opposed to the ones in Disney. He concluded the article, saying, "Speaking of the hole, perhaps she should have kept her hole shut? Glass houses, Keira, glass houses."
I mean, this dude is clearly an asshole. In an attempt to prove her hypocrisy, he vehemently and ignorantly objectified her, reinforcing her statement to not wait for men to find your voice. He took it upon himself to tell her to stop talking, and went on to talk about his own opinions. The discussion of body positivity and female objectification needs to be highly considered, and O’Shalae did the exact opposite. It is a perfect example how many media messages are controlled by crusty and egotistical men like him, especially in relation to the objectification of women.

  1. O’Shale attempted to undermine Knightley’s comments with the work that she has done. He his arguememt ignores that she is objectified because of the male gaze. It is mostly men who work behind the scenes and direct her in movies, photoshoots, etc. However, she is a mother who is entitled to provide different models for what a women can be.
