Grey's Anatomy, Station 19 Crossover
Grey's Anatomy in my eyes does a good a job of representing multiple races and cultures in reoccurring roles. They have a black female chief Doctor Bailey and a black female head of cardio Doctor Maggie Pierce and Doctor Meredith Grey is head general surgery and Doctor Amelia Shepard is head of Neurosurgery. Shonda Rhimes is showing young girls and young girls or color that they can be doctors too and not just doctors, but they can be the best in their field.
The show that replaced Scandals time slot on TGIT, (rest in peace to the best show ever) is Station 19 created by Stacy McKee is also produced by Shonda Rhimes and is a spin off of Grey's Anatomy. Last week Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 did a crossover episode lasting 2 hours. In the episode there is a black woman who is terminal due to her injuries and her son is terrified, the son's father lies to him about his mothers illness so the boy runs away and falls into the drainage system in the city which requires the fire department to save him. The fire station's captain is a black male played by Boris Kodjoe. He is a character that is not fully developed yet so he appears to be a stereotypical black man that is tough and hard to work for, he has a hard time showing his emotions so it appears that he is always angry. Andrea Herrera is the main protagonist and she is a hispanic female who's life appear to be falling apart but she is also successful in her career as a firefighter.
My biggest complaint about these shows is that though they are inclusive of multiple races those characters seem to fall into stereotypes. Doctor Bailey as the angry black woman, though she has recently been more developed, Boris Kodjoe is kind of a Brute, other women seem to not be fulfilled by just working they all have a desire to have a man.
There is also an effort to include the LGBT community. Doctors from Grey's Anatomy have been lesbian and gay and there is a transgender intern. On station 19 there is a gay firefighter who's relationships are on screen a lot and a lesbian firefighter who hasn't been fully developed yet.
