#IndigenousPeopleDay

In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue. That's the little jingle they teach kids in elementary school social studies classes to remind them of the man who discovered America. The definition of discover according to Cambridge Dictionary is "to finds something for the first time, or something that had not been known before." Indigenous people have lived in America for over 15,000 years.
The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian released an article noting states that have made the change from Columbus Day to Indigenous People Day or something similar. "In 2015 an estimated 6,000 Native people and their supporters gathered at Randall’s Island, New York, to recognize the survival of the Indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere. The demonstration’s success and the worldwide media attention it attracted planted the seeds for creating an Indigenous Peoples’ Day in New York City." According to the article Alaska, Hawaii, MinnesotaOregon, South Dakota and Vermont.

People have taken to twitter today October 12 to celebrate Indigenous People Day and to dismiss Columbus Day.
