Islamophobia in Popular TV
In the popular new British series Bodyguard, there is continuous criticism that the character Nadia is Islamophobic, due to the stereotype that Muslim women are supposedly oppressed by Muslim men along with the Quran, and that all Muslims are terrorists. Popular shows that focus on foreign relations/war in the Middle East often depict Muslims as terrorists such as the renowned series Homeland. The show also receives positive reviews as it is said to be enthralling, action-packed, and captivating. Common misconceptions frames the Muslim community in stereotypical views, such as those listed above. When watching TV, it is important for viewers to be conscious of such stereotypes. This example of stereotypes in the media reminds us to always be asking questions. We must ask ourselves: Are Muslims portrayed as a victim of, or the perpetrator of, Islamic terrorism? Are they presented as violent/irrationally angry? Are they culturally backwards or anti-modern? When we see media depict the Muslim community in this light, it is clear that they have failed the representation of the Muslim community.

One point from class that stick with me about islamphobia is how even marginalized groups are often islamphobic and I think that is extremely true. The fact that a mainstream show likes this has islamphobic characters that it does not check means that it is normalizing it. therefore, we have a lot of work to do.
