It's Called Gentrification: Why Worcester's "New" Appeal is Negative
An NPR article released October 23rd, 2018 discusses the author’s perception of Worcester, a city in Central Massachusetts. The article compliments Worcester, but it only compliments parts of Worcester which have been gentrified, meaning that the author is trying to show readers that gentrification is an effective measure in determining the quality of a given location. It also reinforces the symbolic annihilation of the people who have been forced to evict their homes or whose needs have been tossed aside as a result of gentrification and of making Worcester seem more ‘hipstery’.Though this is a news article and not TV, it’s clear that cultivation is at work due to the ways that the author uses language and tone to express their feelings about the city in a way that standardizes the way audiences will consume the article, and thus feel about this city.
