LUMXN Zine: Intersectional Womxns Zine Coming to AU's Campus!

LUMXN Zine is a publication under Women's Initiative that will debut in the Spring and seeks to highlight intersectional womxn doing unconventional community building. Their mission statement reads: "LUMXN (Lumen), is a Women’s Initiative zine that aims to highlight and promote intersectional womxn doing unconventional work in their communities through, healing, expression or advocacy. Through journalism based interviews, photo series sets, and think pieces via diary entries, poetry, opinion pieces and art, we aim to give the world a glimpse of the feminine energy influencing the lives of many."

Publications like these are extremely timely during this administration. Especially after the memo released about possible changes to the way gender is defined under title xi to be less inclusive of non-binary individuals.

In addition to capturing womxn with diverse identities, LUMXN also prioritizes intersectional work that is being done by the womxn. For example, one feature is a Black owned business that is serving a POC community while also offering a service of healing teas and tonic shots. There are multiple layers to the community building work being done and these are people making a difference despite not in conventional political order ways and not getting much media attention.

Building on Kimberly Crenshaw's definitions of intersectionality, there is also the wheel of oppression. It shows us how oppression manifest in several ways that we often don't even think about and allows us to see our privilege in several ways, even for oppressed groups. This wheel is at the core of LUMXN's ideology and we hope to see very intersectional pieces from this publication.

  1. I've heard a lot about this publication and not only is it incredible but it's also extremely necessary to provide images of such deeply marginalized communities in ways that are complex and abstract and potentially even difficult to understand the depth of -- I think having people express themselves in any way, from telling a joke to sharing a story, is a small way to remove the symbolic annihilation which so many people within marginalized communities face. It's extremely important that LUMXN strives to provide advocacy for small business owners in the DC community/DMV area, as noted in this blog post.
