Megyn Kelly on blackface

On Tuesday, the host of the NBC show, 'Megyn Kelly Today,' made remarks defending blackface and commented on how people should be allowed to use blackface for Halloween costumes. The host, Megyn Kelly, was immediately attacked on social media for her racist remarks and people were quick to jump in and educate her about the racists history behind blackface. Many were disappointed with Kelly and said that as a TV personality, she needs to be well educated and informing her viewers on these types of issues instead of spurring controversy about them.

Kelly issued an apology on Wednesday saying, “I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep. I’ve never been a ‘pc’ kind of person — but I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age. Particularly on race and ethnicity issues which, far from being healed, have been exacerbated in our politics over the past year.”

This connected to the Cultivation Theory we discussed in class. As a TV personality, Kelly plays a role in shaping the views, ideals, and morals people hold. It is important that she is educated about issues and knows what ideas she is spreading to her audience. Additionally, this connects to framing because of the way she wrote her apology. Bu saying that she has never been a 'pc' person, she is basically apologizing by telling her audience she doesn't regret what she said, she just regrets the backlash. This is the wrong way to show people that what she did was wrong and that it's important for people to understand that blackface is racist.
