#MeToo and greater representation of women

An article in The New York Times this week showed how in the jobs that were lost by men as a consequence of the #MeToo movement, 43% of the replacements were women: one third in news, one quarter in government, and one fifth in entertainment/arts. More representation in media for women is important to challenge controlling images and symbolic annihilation, although the article doesn't say what percent of these women were women of color and/or LGBTQ women. If the jobs were replaced by mostly white women than women of color and women with other lived experiences are being left out of the category "women." Overall, women are still underrepresented in powerful social and political institutions, and many of the men who lost their jobs are still financially well-off.
Here are some of the replacements

  1. I had no idea the proportion of replacements was to this extent. This is actually awesome! The hardships that women and other marginalized groups associated with the #MeToo movement is absolutely irreconcilable, but it's one small ray of hope that women are taking the places of sexist and inappropriate men in power.

  2. It's good to see that in many cases women are taking the jobs of men that lost them because of the MeToo movement. Women are needed in positions of power in order to combat the heteropatriarchy that dominates our society. I think you bring up a good point about the demographics of the women that have taken these jobs as women of color and LGBTQ women also need to be put in positions of power in order to change the stereotypical narratives we see and are even more underrepresented in these powerful positions compared to white women.
