Pero Like: Champion for Latinx Intersectionality
You may have seen Pero Like videos on Facebook or Twitter before. Not only are they funny, but they also have a diverse cast of non-binary and Afro-Latinx individuals.
Two favorites are Juilssa and Gadiel. Two Afro-Dominicans that are unapologetically themselves. Videos that they and other Afro-Latinxs are featured in include "What Afro-Latinos want you to know" and Afro-Latinos get DNA tested.
These videos are important because they highlight intersectionality in the Latino community. Afro-Latinos have recently been getting more recognition and Pero Like's videos is one casual way that reaches millions with knowledge and laughs
Another intersectional identity that is highlighted with Pero Like is being LGBTQ and Latinx. They have videos about what it means to be Latinx and gay and videos sharing their experiences coming out to their parents. This is often a traumatic experience considering not only societal norms in America, but the strong traditional values that follow these immigrant communities from their countries.
Media companies like Pero Like, Mitu, and other primly Black mediums such as the Root and Blavity are significant for several reasons. They are creating fun engaging content, as well as hard-hitting media, that is targeted towards people in the community to keep them informed and by the people in these communities. Media outlets such as these can make us feel like we have a home in this country and that some media does have our best interest at heart. Just like the Kerner reperoport said, one solution to solving better coverage of marginalized communities, is to hire these people as journalist.
