Shonda Rhimes is the Highest Paid TV Producer

Shonda recently came out this week at Elle's 25th Annual Women in Hollywood Celebration as the highest paid TV producer show runner in television. Shonda is responsible for several hit shows like Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. She is also beginning an other series with Netflix.

Given the statistics we discussed in class about women in the production of televisions content, Shonda Rhimes is a noteworthy outlier to the depressing statistics about women in media. For her to be the highest paid in a field that is overwhelmingly male dominated- and to also be a Black women, is revolutionary and gives us hope for the future of media.

These kinds of lived experiences are important in order to accurately depict women of color and other marginalized groups. As the founding from the Kerner report stated, the value of individuals with lived experiences reporting and portraying individuals that look like them as that it can offer more accurate reporting. Considering that television as a major force that cultivates our social reality, Shonda is not just a producer, she's a society shaper.
