The Conners return to ABC

The Conners returned this week after the cancellation of Roseanne. Roseanne Barr’s offensive tweets prompted the reboot’s cancellation despite its popularity. In the premiere of the new season, it is revealed that the matriarch dies of an opioid overdose. The Conners remains relevant because it places a relatable working-class family in primetime television. The characters share different political beliefs, yet they always come together as a family. Having the matriarch die from painkillers brings attention to the opioid epidemic that has killed thousands of people from the population that this family represents. Working class families are not featured on television as they were in the 70s, 80s and 90s. It is important that the show was able to return as The Conners because it represents diversity with middle America that often is symbolically annihilated from the media.
