Transracial adoption on the Daily Show
Nicole Chung, the author of "All You Can Ever Know", appeared on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. The book is a story of her upbringing as a Korean adopted child in a white family who eventually reaches out to her biological family. Chung said though her family was very loving, they weren't very educated on how to bring up race and how it would affect people's perceptions of her. Chung's lived experience resonates with other transracial adopted children who don't have these conversations with these parents when they could be facing these questions at school or outside of the home. I think there have been some recent moments on TV where this is put into play, particularly on This Is Us when Rebecca calls out her mom for being racist to Rebecca's adopted black son Randall. Though this is having some media moments, the reality is that there are definitely conversations that still need to be had between adoptive parents and their children of color that aren't been had. Hopefully there can be more media moments and spotlight on the lived experiences of transracial adoptees as a result of Nicole Chung.
