Women Like Me
The internet was sent into buzz mode when Little Mix featuring Nicki Minaj dropped their music video for "Women Like Me."
The video features the women smashing the traditional roles of women. They are rising above the stereotypes, conformity, inequality and toxic standards. Their roles as strong women are to strength as women. However, the video is shot through the lense of the male gaze. They are wearing outfits with strong sex appeal and dancing on poles in sexy ways. We do not know if it was their choice to dress this way or someone elses, however it satisfies the straight males sexual appetite.

UG that is so frustrating that something with such a great message is told and showed through a perspective a male. We need to call out media and the women in the video as well, so that they portray women in these various roles but without the sex appeal and objectification.
ReplyDeleteAlways tough to break through these barriers. It's so disappointing to see how deep the male gaze goes, especially when trying to empower women outside of their sexuality.
ReplyDeleteI really like this post because I see this a lot in activism that is done through media fronts like this. It is unfortunate because they principles are there (women’s equality and challenging gender roles) but they are playing into the oppressive forces by dressing in clothing that meets the male’s gaze.
