A New & Improved Spider-Man

Since 2002, there have been 6 different spider-man movies. They all consist of generally the same character and plot, the same villains, and the same barriers Peter Parker must overcome to take on the responsibility of his power as a superhero. However, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse, takes the beloved story line and updates it to be more modern. The main character of the movie is a biracial boy named Miles. Miles is half Puerto Rican and half black. The story focuses on him being a kid and trying to use his powers to help people while still growing up and maturing like everyone else. Critics are praising this movie as groundbreaking and changing the scene for superhero movies.
This movie connects to our class because of the representation of people of color as main characters in movies. Miles is biracial, the main character of the movie, and the protagonist. While this is starting to be seen increasingly more in the media, it is still important that films are increasing representation. Additionally, there have already been 6 iterations of this movie premise and this is the first film to star a person of color as spider-man. This movies has been getting extremely good reviews and people are calling it the best superhero movie. This is important because it promotes more diverse protagonists and racial representation in the media.
