Aerie's Ad Campaign Featuring models with disabilities
American Eagle's new ad campaign features models who are disabled. This is truly important as no other media outlet or advertisement campaign that I know of has done this in a way that features women who are disabled, including women of color, modeling bras and underwear in a way that does not hyperfocus on their disability or overly sexualize them. It is not about them overcoming their disability or making a spectacle of their disability, it is just people modeling bras.
I have seen a few models with disabilities for ASOS. What makes Aerie special is that they go out of their way to be diverse with their models. Their Real campaign has always normalized bodies that are not white and thin. It has not focused on the models being "other," such as plus-size. disabled or a person of color. Aerie has been able to create a brand that is truly inclusive in ways that other brands have not.
