ASOS and Ableism in Online Shopping
ASOS, an online clothing store, recently released advertisements which are inclusive of disabled shoppers by using advertisements with disabled models in them. When people discuss models and representation, they tend to think about runways, about Fashion Week, about live events which become a display for society’s views on fashion. However, it is important not to forget that under the topic of models is online shopping, and the types of models who are pictured in online ads. This ASOS jacket ad has a person with a wheelchair in one of their jackets, which is positive because it halts the symbolic annihilation of people with disabilities and allows them to have representation and agency in American society. However, it could be negative because people are less likely to pay attention to an online shop model than a model who is on a runway.
