Defining terms for a better discussion
In light of the recent election of the new Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, Al Jazeera's Mariana Prandini Assis and Ana Carolina Ogando wrote an article titled, "Bolsonaro, 'gender ideology' and hegemonic masculinity in Brazil."
The article discusses Bolsonaro's sexist remarks, such as how he said the birth of his only daughter was the "result of a moment of weakness."
Most notably, the authors spend time detailing what all the terms mean before they discuss the effects of Bolsonaro so that the readers can understand what they are speaking of. They define and put into context terms like, "gender ideology," "hegemonic masculinity," and "gender."
Many news outlets discuss Bolsonaro and Trump and their policies on gender and sexuality, but they rarely define words so that any reader can understand what they are talking about. If we want readers to empathize with LGBTQI issues, the news media should host a more inclusive discussion about gender.
I think this is super helpful especially when a lot of these terms are more rooted in American societal views about gender and masculinity and don't have cultural definitions in other societies like Brazil that have different trajectory paths of feminism than the U.S.
