Dyson's ad enforces outdated gender roles
Dyson, a company mostly known for its vacuums, released a kid-size vacuum cleaner. Channel 10 in Columbus, Ohio tweeted about it:
The advertisement shows a little girl holding the device, which draws upon old and offensive stereotypes about women being domestic and having limited career choices, other than being stay at home mothers. I find this even more problematic because of the girl's young age. This instills damaging values that can affect this child's development and the self-fulfilling prophecy, where girls will not be able to see themselves as anything other than maids of a home.
I agree that this advertisement promotes heteropatriarchy and gendered stereotypes about women. It would have been a lot better of an ad that did not promote these stereotypes if it showed both a little boy and a little girl with the vacuum.
