Framing in Coverage of the Migrant Caravan
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists published an article this week about news media's covering of the Migrant Caravan. It called out language, word choice, and framing by media organizations like the Associated Press, who are using words that imply violence, war, and invasion. As we learned with the Kerner Commision Report, media has a responsibility to report on the context, specifically that these migrants are seeking asylum which they have a human and legal right to do, fleeing from violence in their home countries.
"When coverage is poorly executed it can quickly contribute to the growing trend of profiling Latinos as scapegoats for a variety of society’s ills." (NAHJ).
Look at some of the language used below, both to described the USBP violent use of tear gas on migrants, including children, and to describe the actions of the migrants themselves.
