Gerard Butler and his New Navy-endorsed Movie

In thinking about how politics and media reinforce each other, and how Hollywood is shaped by policies, a great example is that actor Gerard Butler spoke at the Pentagon this on October 15 to thank the Navy with help in his movie called "Hunter Killer," and to promote the movie. The movie came out this weekend.

Many have complained that the Pentagon does not do enough news conferences (the last one Dana White held was in May), so the public does not know what is going on in the U.S. military.

During the press conference, Butler said they had to stop movie promotion in Saudi Arabia after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. I am wondering why they were promoting the movie in Saudi Arabia anyway, and how...

The movie is based on the book "Firing Point" by retired naval officer George Wallace and author Don Keith, and its production was supported and aided by the U.S. Navy. It is a work of fiction, that plays of the American public's fear of WWIII and Russia.
Just another example of how interlinked the U.S. government and Hollywood are, and the ideologies around the U.S. and war, and how normalized it is. What other actors have held a press conference in the Pentagon to promote their movies?

  1. I never realized how there are many links between the US government and the action and war movies that we see in Hollywood until this class. It is another example of how many of the stereotypes we see in media are meant to further the United States and other Western countries' political agendas.
