How News Media Contributes to Cultivation: Response to Thousand Oaks shooting

An article published by CNN on November 8th, 2018 gave live updates regarding the Thousand Oaks shooting. These updates were divided into several categories; most of them relating to the logistics of the events, such as the location and the victims/shooter. The last one referred to Trump’s opinion on the event.
Though it is common for news outlets to refer to the advice and beliefs of the current President to influence how the audience will perceive the event, utilizing Trump’s beliefs in particular is a choice that contributes to cultivating support for Trump and what Trump supports. Since Trump’s comment will inherently be in support of systems such as police that erase other populations, it is the duty of reporters to choose carefully what they include and regard as important in their content. By including Trump’s content instead of other facts which are highly relevant to the story (specific times, weapons used, witness reports, etc), these reporters are complicit in the cultivation of support for Trump and for the United States government as it stands today, even if their inclusion of Trump's comment is simply so that the public can judge it or mock it, because it is included nonetheless.
