The trailer for Isn't it Romantic? came out last week and it promises to turn the cheesy rom-com genre on its head. Rebel Wilson is portrayed as the "fat and frumpy" girl who barely dates. This is portrayed in a self-deprecating comic relief role in the beginning, though Rebel Wilson has sort of made her plus size body a part of her comedy. When she hits her head and wakes up in a romantic fairytale land, she now has a stereotypically feminine gay best friend and has a complete new makeover so she's more appealing to the male gaze. Where this movie could be strong in is its ability to prove the fairytale land of rom coms wrong by saying you don't need to have a certain body type or look to have a fairytale romance. Where this movie falls flat is promoting the gay best friend stereotype as a comic relief to the former comic relief of the fat, frumpy girl who is now beautiful and no longer requires her looks as a way to seem acceptable.
UG this movie already frustrates me and it is something I don't even want to see. The way in which the media makes a laughing stalk out of women who are heavier is so dangerous to the audience.
