Jane the Virgin
I began watching Jane the Virgin right when it first aired on television. That was back when I didn’t pay too much attention to the characters and the issues surrounding the characters. This show has many achievements to be proud of, and also some things to fix. I critique this show because of the stereotype of Jane’s mother in the show, Xiomara. Xiomara had Jane at a very young age and her father wasn’t in the picture, but then later came back into the picture. The portrayal of Jane’s mom in the show falls under the promiscuous Latina woman stereotype. She is often wearing little clothing and you wouldn’t even think that she is a mother. Another dangerous stereotype in this show is that of Jane’s grandmother. She is portrayed as a devout and crazy religious Catholic who prays all day long. Also, she is problematic because they portray her as rarely speaking English. Both of these stereotypes are dangerous because we can’t actually take these characters seriously.

I love this show, and I know exactly what you're talking about. While it's funny in it, it's pretty problematic seeing how these characters are portrayed, especially because they let the characters completely play into the stereotypes set for them.
