Jemel Roberson #WorkingWhileBlack
Jemel Roberson, a 26-year-old security guard was shot and killed by police Sunday while on the job outside of a bar near Chicago. Roberson, an armed security guard, was trying to break up a shooting outside of the bar when police arrived. One white officer, who has yet to be named, shot Roberson, believing that he was the shooter.
Roberson's murder sparked an uproar on Twitter, with several users tweeting about his story with #WorkingWhileBlack. This hashtag stems from #LivingWhileBlack, which originated on Twitter during the summer when numerous black women, men and children had the police called on them for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Some examples include a young boy on his newspaper route, a man moving into his new apartment and a child selling water bottles on the sidewalk on a hot summer day.
Some individuals who have had the police called on them for doing daily tasks while black are seeking a congressional hearing to discuss the issues at hand, according to the Washington Post. Some white people are so willing to sic the police on black individuals for doing nothing wrong. No one should have to be worried about being killed by police for living in their own homes or working at their own jobs.
