In the last two years, in particular, many makeup companies have come under fire by people in the beauty world for not catering to every skin tone in their foundation ranges. Many brands, such as YSL and It Cosmetics, received rightful backlash from beauty influencers and the internet for their foundation lines that include several shades for people with light skin and almost no shades for individuals with dark skin.
Insider wrote an article about some brands that were called out for their sorry shade ranges.

In class, we talked about how minority groups that produce their own content and can tell their own stories are able to use their lived experiences to break stereotypes and misrepresentations of their race, religion, gender, etc. Black-owned makeup companies, like Fenty by Rihanna and Beauty Bakerie, show how shade range should really look. White-owned companies should not be failing makeup users in the first place, but companies owned by people of color are creating a shade for every skin tone. Every makeup user should consider buying from brands like Fenty and Beauty Bakerie because they cater to everyone and it is a great opportunity to support businesses owned by people of color.
