Manipulations in the Voting System

In the recent women’s media article, “It’s time for voting to go digital”, Anna Khan comments on ways in which to make the voting process easier to promote a higher voting outcome. Prior to this year and voting in the past midterm elections, I was oblivious to how challenging and manipulative the voting process is. In the media and specifically in the news there is a strong narrative encouraging people to vote. However, a pivotal point that is excluded from this narrative is the obstacles that marginalized communities face in the voting process that make is very challenging for them to go the voting polls and cast their vote. In a talk, I attended at American University the adversity faced by minorities communities in the us in regards to voting was greatly discussed. This talk provided insight explaining that the government wants a certain demographic to vote and to maintain the hegemony voting laws and restrictions are in place to make it harder for certain communities to vote.

  1. I think the agenda setting of trying to get people to vote is great, but it won't do anything unless voting is made more accessible. Online voting may be good for increasing turnout, but as we have seen people do want to attack and manipulate the democratic process in the US. So going completely digital may leave us more vulnerable to attack in the future.
