Police Fatally Shoot Black Security Guard Who Detained Shooting Suspect

Last week, Chicago cops arrived at a bar in response to reportings of gunshots. Jemel Roberson, 26-year-old security guard who worked for the bar had detained the shooting suspect in the parking lot, pinning him down. Cops arrived and immediately shot and killed Roberson, possibly mistaking him as the alleged suspect.

This heartbreaking stories highlights one of the many incidents where non-threatening black men are killed by police. NPR decided to use this photo of Roberson and his 9-month-old son, representing him as a father. Instead of demonizing Roberson, NPR decides to humanize him. It is important to talk about situations like this in the media, especially from a factual and a nondiscriminatory perspective.

  1. This shooting is absolutely heartbreaking. It is good to see that NPR did fall into the trap of the ultimate attribution error we have learned about in class and showed a picture of him with his son.
