Representation in New Netflix Movie Trailer Dumplin'

Netflix released a trailer for a new movie called “Dumplin’” which follows the journey of Willowdean who decides to enter a beauty pageant which her mother, played by Jennifer Aniston, hosts. Willowdean decides to enter the beauty pageant in order to promote body positivity and challenge traditional standards of beauty. The movie is unique since it is one of the few representations where someone who is plus-sized is the main character.

It is great to see a movie that stars a plus-size woman since there is little representation of women in media that do not fit traditional body weight standards. It will be interesting though to see how this movie portrays Willowdean as the trailer seems to show her only portrayed and worried about her weight which is how many plus-sized characters are stereotyped in the media. Hopefully, this movie will end up being a positive representation of plus-size women.
