Swimwear for women with disfigurements
A young Costa Rican fashion designer by the name of María Luisa Mendiola just launched a swimsuit line specifically designed for women with bodily disfigurements, such as scarring from burns, paralysis and cleft lips or palates. Mendiola studied fashion in the UK for her master's degree and came up with the idea for an inclusive swimsuit line after struggling with her own bodily disfigurement, a condition in which her fourth toe is much shorter than the others, for her entire life. She wanted to lessen the stigma surrounding disfigurements and give women with bodily disfigurements and opportunity to feel comfortable and fashionable.
Teen Vogue mentioned that the MIGA swimwear's first line was created by and is dedicated to burn survivors, with six pieces total in the collection. "Each survivor helped design two styles, one that specifically catered to their needs, covering the burned sections of their body, and another more revealing one-piece or bikini style that anyone disfigured or non-disfigured could opt to wear."
This story caught my attention because it reminded me of the conversation we had in class this week about the ugly laws. Though we have come a long way since those times, there is still a huge stigma surrounding bodily disfigurements. I think these swimsuits are a really great way for individuals with disfigurements to gain visibility and power in whether they choose to show or conceal their disfigurements. This line also showcases the work of a Latinx fashion designer.
