The Liberal Agenda and Macy's Parade
The Macy's Annual Thanksgiving Parade featured the first ever lesbian kiss among two characters in the musical Prom. The parade had over 50 million viewers and was seen worldwide. However, not everyone was pleased by the action. For America tweeted about how children had "their innocence broken" after seeing two women kiss. The account has 137.1 thousand followers. The reason this kiss is important is because for the first time young children may have seen two women who resemble their mothers kissing. It removes the symbolic annihilation that love exists only between men and women. It also give LGBT children someone to identify with. The only blatant flaw is that the couple is still dressed in a heteronormative frame.
I recall seeing some criticism of the kiss on twitter and to be honest I was disappointed but not surprised. Seeing how far we have come today on issues such as representation in the LGBT community, I am still in awe at the fact that some people are not on board with the whole idea that it is okay to love whoever. This scene was important because it starts the conversation of why it is okay and why it is necessary to represent LGBT communities in the media.
